Obituary of Manfred Ernst Kern

Please share a memory of Manfred to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Manfred has gone fishing with Eddy; he passed away on June 24, 2021, in Creston, BC at the age of 85.

Manfred was born on November 15, 1935, in Altneudorf, Germany.  In 1954, after finishing his apprenticeship as a gardener/landscaper, he went to Switzerland, working in his trade until 1962 when he started working for SwissAir.  He met the love of his life Helene Kern while hiking in the Swiss Alps, and they were married in Zurich on December 29, 1960.  They came to Canada in 1968 with three children and in 1969 their youngest daughter was born in Vancouver, BC.  Manfred and Helene enjoyed life on a hobby farm in the Fraser Valley, afterwards Manfred continued working in construction and landscaping.

In 1992, Manfred fulfilled one of his dreams when he made a six-month trip through Africa.  When he returned back to Canada, Manfred and Helene moved to the Kootenays, the last move brought them to the beautiful Creston Valley in 2008, where he never tired of driving around watching the farmers work, the fruits grow, and watching for wildlife.

We are left to mourn, and remember lovingly our husband, Papa and Opa, Manfred. His wife Helene Kern, his four children Monika (Jim), Wolfgang, Esther (Philip) and Barbara (Merlin and Brownie), his grandchildren, Michelle, Shawn, Michael, Desmond and Elisianna as well as his brothers Walter and Ernst and their families in Germany.

A Private Family Celebration of Life Service to be held in September 2021.

Friends and family wishing to make a memorial contribution may do so to The Salvation Army Kootenay Valley Community Church, 533 Slater Road NW, Cranbrook, BC V1C 4Y5 or to the Kootenay Wildlife Heritage Fund Society, 108 15th Street S., Cranbrook, BC V1C 6A2.
