Obituary of Marjorie Alice Gilmore

Please share a memory of Marjorie to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Marjorie ‘Marj’ Alice Gilmore (nee Kanester) passed away peacefully on August 29, 2022, in Creston, BC at the age of 96 years.

Marj was born on November 5, 1925, to parents Alice and Reuben Kanester on a ranch near Glentworth, SK. In May of 1933 the Kanester family left Saskatchewan and on their way to Williams Lake, BC, they arrived in Creston, BC, which they enjoyed so much they ended up staying here.  In 1943, Marj graduated from Creston Valey High School with commercial credits.  She held various positions from 1943 to 1952 with the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce and was a manager for 24 years of the Creston & District Credit Union; a position that was only meant to be temporary for a couple of weeks.

In 1945, Marj met Roy Gilmore who was driving the school bus at the time and stopped to give her a ride home to West Creston.  They were married December 5, 1946, and moved to their home with 14 acres of orchard.  In September of 1952 the couple welcomed their son Robert Wayne into the world.

Marj was a member of the Order of Eastern Star, Chapter #55 – Creston, Moyea Club – Daughters of the Nile, Creston Gold Club, Creston New Horizons Senior’s Society at the Rotacrest, and in her earlier years the Creston Curling Club.  Some of her fondest memories are building the Credit Union to a significant place in the community, the 3 hole in one’s while golfing, winning the Valentine’s Bonspeil in curling and the birth of her son and how she was to add him to the family, the many good times with Roy at home and in their travels, fishing with Wayne when he was young, and our outdoor trips which included hunting, getting wood, etc.  She loved the fall and its quiet beauty.

Marj was predeceased by her husband Roy Gilmore, parents Reuben and Alice Kanester, brother Clifford Kanester, sisters Lena Halbour, Zora Hendren and Gerry Ostendorf as well as two half-sisters and three half-brothers.

Marj will be lovingly remembered by her son Wayne (Betty), grandson Jason (Karen), great grandsons Sebastian and Adien, sister Gail (Alex) Johnston, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

A Private Family Graveside Service will be held at a later date at Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erickson, BC.

In lieu of flowers, friends wishing to make a memorial contribution may do so to the Heart & Stroke Foundation - BC & Yukon, 885 Dunsmuir St., Vancouver, BC, V6C 1N5 or to the charity of their choice.
